How to erase one user's memory

When a person asks to be forgotten, you need to erase their memory in Harny. This guide gives the one call that erases a person's data, the call that deletes a single data point, and how to check usage afterward.

The problem

A person asks your app to forget them. Their memory in Harny is still there until you delete it.

Erasure has to cover the whole person, not one note. Your app needs one call that removes their data.

How it works in Harny

Erasing a person calls DELETE /v1/users/{user_id}/data.

Deleting a single data point calls DELETE /v1/memory/data-points/{sourceId}. It also deletes the memories built on that data point. Bulk delete takes up to 1,000 ids, and deletes are free.

Your app's key starts with fsa_. Call the API from a server, never a browser.

Step by step

  1. Confirm the request came from the person, or from someone allowed to act for them.
  2. Erase the person's data with one call: DELETE /v1/users/{user_id}/data.
  3. To remove a single item instead, delete its data point: DELETE /v1/memory/data-points/{sourceId}.
  4. Check the month's count: GET /v1/memory/usage.
  5. Record in your app that the erasure ran.

What can go wrong

  • Deleting a data point also deletes the memories built on it. Check that you did not remove more than you meant.
  • Calling the API from a browser is not supported. Call it from a server.

Example: Nadia at Acme

Nadia at Acme asks the Acme pilot to forget her. Her user id is demo-user.

The app calls DELETE /v1/users/demo-user/data. It then checks GET /v1/memory/usage and tells Nadia that her data has been erased.
