Ingestion time

Ingestion time is the moment a system receives a record, as opposed to the moment the event it describes happened. In Harny, a memory write is queued first and then completed, and you can send the event time as the timestamp field.

What ingestion time is

Ingestion time is the time a memory system accepts a record. It is different from the time the underlying event took place. A note written on Monday about a call on Friday has a Friday event time and a Monday ingestion time.

Keeping both times lets you see when something was known, not only when it happened.

Why it matters

  • It shows when the system first received a fact.
  • A record can arrive late, so event time and ingestion time often differ.
  • Queued writes need to finish before they are done, so ingestion is not instant.

How it works in Harny

  1. Send a memory with POST /v1/memory/ingest and a timestamp in ISO 8601 with zone, the time it happened.
  2. Harny answers 202 with an ingestionId while the send is queued.
  3. Poll GET /v1/memory/ingest/{ingestionId} until the status is completed.

Is ingestion time the same as event time?

No. Ingestion time is when the system received the record. Event time is when the event happened. In Harny you send the event time as the timestamp field on the send.
